Traits Of Gifted Children

Every parent should know how to recognize potential traits of gifted children. These traits can manifest as early as the toddler years or not become evident until the child is well into their elementary education. Many of the characteristics are clear cut and obvious, while others are much less obvious and may even seem to signal developmental delays when in fact they are signs of giftedness. In this article you will learn about some of the most common traits gifted youngsters display. Be advised that all children are different and in order to determine giftedness formal evaluation by a school or child development professional must be performed.

First and foremost, gifted youth may display particular interest, mastery or affinity for a certain subject. You may find your toddler is talking at a more advanced level as compared to toddlers in the same age range. Maybe your young child has learned to read and write at an early age, and does so quite well considering the average benchmark. While some children are intellectually gifted, others are talented in areas like the arts and athletics. These gifts are no less important and should be recognized and nurtured also.

There are some surprising traits gifted children may display. They may be difficult to manage, prone to frustration, shy or withdrawn, or even bossy towards other children. It is entirely possible that a gifted child may actually get bad grades because they are either very bored in class or are trying to remain a normal and accepted member of their peer group. It is a sad truth that many children with talents and gifts are ostracized by other students who may be jealous of the gifted child's abilities. Luckily there are special classes and even schools designed to meet the academic and social needs of talented and gifted children.

If you notice the traits of gifted children in your child, do not automatically assume the are gifted. The actual process of screening by the school involves various evaluation and testing methods. Your child may be given an IQ test, either in a group, separately or both. If your child is talented in the arts or an athletic area, they may be placed in a special class for likewise students by the school. Any special school or class for the gifted and talented should allow the child to exercise their full potential in a comfortable, friendly and supportive environment.
