Toddler Gifted
Have you noticed your toddler demonstrating abilities above his or her age level? If so, you may wonder is your toddler gifted. While giftedness is most often recognized during the school years after a thorough screening and testing process, there are things to look out for that could signify a gifted child. However, it is important to remember that all toddlers develop at different rates. The toddler who can read at an early age may not be a gifted child, while the one who develops more slowly could blossom into an intellectual genius later in life. It all depends on the individual child.
Gifted toddlers are often very inquisitive about the world around them. While this is great as far as their learning experience is concerned it may be quite worrisome for the parent chasing them around and constantly removing potentially hazardous items from their curious little hands. The inquisitive toddler wants to experience everything, and they are often quite ambitious when it comes to skills like walking, talking, reading, writing, math, art, music and other endeavors.
You may notice your toddler seems more advanced when he or she is grouped together with other children of the same age. It may seem like your toddler would be happier playing with children who are older, and perhaps they would. Just like the gifted child, the gifted child is advanced as compared to his or her peers. Some toddlers with intellectual or artistic gifts may be hard to manage and easy to frustration. Like all toddlers, the gifted toddler is quite intent on doing what they want to do.This is common also with school age children who are gifted and/or talented.
Rather than wondering is your toddler gifted or not, try encouraging those areas in which you notice aptitude. The truth is most children aren't tested for giftedness until they attend school. However you can definitely help your toddler explore the areas in which he or she seems talented. If your toddler loves music play it for them all the time. Allow your child to experiment with art materials (non-toxic) of course, and introduce them to books and flash cards. You may want to keep a journal about your child's progress, which can really help you in the future if your child undergoes talented and gifted testing at their future elementary school or other educational facility.
