Gifted Talented Children
There are gifted talented children characteristics that you can look for to determine whether or not your child may fall under this category. There are different types of talents and gifts including academic, artistic and athletic. For some parents, evidence of giftedness manifests during the toddler years. Your toddler may be especially good at reading, speaking or artistic endeavors. They may have a special affinity towards music and demonstrate natural musical ability. However not every gifted child shows signs of their giftedness at such a young age.
There are some signs in school-age children that may signify gifted capabilities. Some of them are more evident than others. For example, if your child goes exceptionally well with their studies and grades the school may decide to screen them for a talented and gifted program. In addition, art teachers, music teachers and physical education teachers may also recognize special talents in some students. While these may seem like easy traits to spot, other gifted traits may not be so easy to recognize.
For example, some gifted children may display boredom, bad behavior, hypersensitivity or even poor academic performance because they want to fit in with their peers or are frustrated because the lessons being taught in their classroom are far above their level of learning. For example, an average child may have to go over an educational concept 30 times before mastery is achieved. A gifted child may master the same concept in one, two or three tries. You can see how such a child would become easily frustrated having a lesson they already know taught over and over again for the benefit of the other students.
When speaking about characteristics of gifted talented children, it should be noted that academic performance is not the only barometer of giftedness or special aptitude. A child who struggles in class may be a wonderful musician, talented artist or amazing athlete. In these cases the child may not be moved to a talented and gifted classroom but they may be enrolled in special programs that focus on the areas in which they have talent. To learn more about traits of talented and gifted youth, speak to your child's doctor and/or consult with their school.
