Gifted Children Programs

If your child has been deemed gifted following specific screening and tests given by the school or an educational professional, he or she may be placed in gifted children programs. These programs are often recommended for these children because the average class does not move fast enough for them. An intellectually gifted child may become bored and uninterested in the lessons being taught because they are far beyond that educational point. This may lead to poor performance, unruly behavior or overall unhappiness with the school experience.

Therefore, schools have developed TAG programs which stands for Talented and Gifted. These programs help students learn in an environment that is supportive to their needs and challenging for their minds. In order to gain acceptance to such a program the child would need to be screened first by the school who first nominates the child for possible inclusion in the TAG program. In some schools there are gifted classes that run the entire school day and in others the TAG programs are an addition to normal classroom attendance.

Some gifted children feel uncomfortable with the designation of being gifted and/or talented. They may feel like an outcast or feel embarrassed that they have to attend different classes than their friends. These children are often very sensitive and may even downplay their abilities in an attempt to fit in with their peer group. They may even be sensitive to things like loud sounds, touch and crowds, which is called hypersensitivity. Not all hypersensitive children are gifted, and not all gifted children are hypersensitive. For these reasons and others counseling with a professional who specializes in gifted youth may be helpful. Your child's school and/or pediatrician may be able to refer you to an appropriate counseling professional.

As a general rule, gifted children programs should be considered for any child tested and deemed as gifted. Rather than these children sitting through tedious lessons that they may have already learned the first time, they can explore more challenging subjects and curriculum that is suited to their intellectual level. You may find that when your gifted child is placed in a learning environment that supports their level of academic intelligence their gifts and talents are able to grow and the child may be happier as well.
