Gifted Adults
There are many excellent organizations, useful websites and books for gifted adults. While many people think of gifted children, adults can also be intellectually and/or artistically gifted. Many adults who are gifted were never recognized as such when they were children. As a matter of fact, they may even have been labeled a problem child. Many gifted children are misunderstood because they are bored in class or act up in an attempt to fit in with their peers.
These days there is less of a stigma attached to giftedness at all ages. You can feel open and comfortable regarding the fact you are intellectually and/or artistically gifted. There are also a variety of advocacy groups and membership organizations such as Mensa. In America alone, Mensa has 50,000 chapters. It is estimated that six million citizens qualify for membership. The age of Mensa members range from four year olds to those over 100. Members include individuals from all walks of life, such as homemakers, retirees, students, entertainers, executives and more.
Qualifications for Mensa membership are simple. All you have to do is score in the top 2 percent on a standardized test designed to measure intelligence. Members get to meet other members at a variety of Mensa functions on a local, regional and national level. There are also community volunteer opportunities that help you make a positive difference in the world. You can find out more about the organization and how to apply for membership at their official website. Mensa isn't all you'll find on the web for the gifted. There are many websites made especially for adults with gifted qualities.
You may also want to check out some books about gifted adults. Two titles worth your consideration are The Gifted Adult: A Revolutionary Guide for Liberating Everyday Genius by Mary-Elaine Jacobsen and Gifted Grownups: The Mixed Blessings of Extraordinary Potential by Marylou Kelly Streznewski.Your local bookstore or library should have other books that can help educate you regarding gifted adulthood. Your gifts may manifest in different areas, as many people have certain subjects in which they excel. Life as a gifted adult can be very rewarding and fulfilling because you can channel your gifts into your career, creative projects, community service and other useful ways.
