Creative Gifted
Have you received comments that your child may be gifted and talented in some areas? There are millions of creative gifted children in the United States. They often require special attention in order for their talents and abilities to thrive. Because these children can go on to do great things in the world as adults, guidance in the formative years is imperative. The first step is testing, which occurs between the ages of four and eight. This is the age when children should be placed in talented and gifted programs.
Talented and gifted or TAG is a program in many schools designed for children who have scored above a certain point on the standardized test for giftedness. A variety of schools also have special art and music programs for students who show exceptional aptitude in these areas. The goal is to keep children among their regular classmates but also give them ample time with other gifted children, in programs that challenge and stimulate their intellect and creativity. If you have questions about these programs there should be a staff member at your child's school who works in this area.
The NAGC or National Association for Gifted Children is another name you should know because they work hard to educate parents, schools and government regarding the needs of gifted kids. The NAGC publishes magazines and has a very informative website where you can learn more about what they do. You may decide to become a member because this association holds events and conventions where members and their families can socialize and learn at the same time.
Creative gifted children may also require emotional counseling by a school guidance counselor or psychologist. These children can sometimes feel ostracized by their peers, especially if they have a reputation as being a 'teachers pet' or are so shy that they may be perceived as snobby because they do so well in school. Sometimes gifted kids are picked on or have trouble making friends (although in some cases they are very popular.) Counselors can help gifted children cope with their personal and social issues, and work out strategies to make school enjoyable as well as educational. These counselors may also help the child figure out the best way to apply their unique artistic and academic talents.
